Here are some quick questions to help you decide if your child, aged 7-8, is ready to begin piano lessons. If you can answer yes to all of these questions, your child may be ready to begin.
- Does your child show an interest in music?
- Does your child “play” the piano you have in your home?
- Has the child asked to learn?
- Can your child lift each finger independently from the others?
- Can your child’s hand span five keys on the piano?
- Can your child sit still and concentrate on a task for ten minutes at a time?
- Can your child tell the difference between high and low, same and different, and fast and slow?
- Can your child read alphabet letters, at least through G?
- Will your child have a parent available to sit at the piano with her/him at home to practice?
- Is that parent willing to be actively engaged in music learning?
